Locks and keys are designed to keep ourselves and our belongings safe, whether that’s in our homes, offices, luggage, or our cars. A parked car can be much more vulnerable than your home, so let’s look at some ways to keep your car safe from damage and theft.
Keep your car locked
The most obvious way to secure your car is to keep it locked at all times when you park it, whether that’s at home, at work, or out in public. Make sure all the doors and trunk are properly locked, in case they lock separately, and that all windows are wound up before you leave the car. Electronic car fobs are handy in allowing you to lock your car from a distance in case you forget. There are even some apps that let you lock your car from your smartphone.
Remove valuables from your car
Unfortunately, a locked car can still be at risk of someone smashing the windows or picking the locks. Opportunists are especially likely to do this if they see something worth stealing through your windows. Always remove your phone, wallet, and any other valuables from your car. If you have to leave something in there while you go into a store, for example, then make sure it is hidden from view. You shouldn’t even leave an empty purse or wallet in sight because passers-by won’t know that it’s empty, leaving you with a broken window if they decide to take their chances.
Maintain the locks properly
Lock picking is another potential way someone could break into your car. Older locks that are worn and perhaps even damaged will be easier to break into than modern locks that are well maintained. So, it’s important to have your locks checked and maintained regularly, replacing them if they start to deteriorate. And make sure you treat your locks well, too. If you find yourself locked out, don’t try to pick the lock as this can cause more damage – call a mobile locksmith instead.
Park it in a safe place
Where you park your car also determines how secure it is. It may be at risk parked on the street or on your drive. The best place to park is in a garage that’s securely locked. And just like car locks, modern garage door locks will keep your garage more secure. If you don’t have a garage, then try to park your car in a well-lit area where there are plenty of cars and people passing by.
