If you’ve lost your keys, had them stolen, or have just moved into a new home, then you want to make sure that your safety and security are ensured. You need to make sure that no one has a key that will give them access to your home without your authorization. To do this, you have two main choices – having your locks changed or having them rekeyed. We’ll consider these two options so you can decide which is best for you.
What is lock replacement?
With lock replacement, the actual lock hardware is removed from your door and replaced with a new one. You will then get new keys that fit the new lock. This way, you can ensure that only you have the keys that are the counterpart to your locks.
What is rekeying?
Rekeying does not involve replacing the lock hardware, but it does involve altering it. A locksmith will take apart the lock and replacing the tumblers or pins that allow the lock to be opened. This means your old keys will no longer match the pattern of the pins inside your lock cylinder, meaning they won’t be able to unlock it. You will then be provided with new keys that do match the new pattern.
Either of these services can also be used for car key replacement.
Which locksmith service should you choose?
Both of these services give you the security that there isn’t a stranger out there with a key that works with your locks. So, how do you know which one to choose? Generally, rekeying is a much cheaper service compared to changing the locks completely. So, if it is possible, then rekeying is usually the more sensible option.
However, there are some situations where you will be better off changing your locks, or where it is the only option. If your locks are very old, for example, then they will have become worn or even damaged. At a certain point, it is simpler and more cost-effective to choose lock replacement. There’s not much point of paying to have your locks rekeyed if you’re just going to have to have them replaced in a year’s time due to excessive wear or damage.
It is best to contact a mobile locksmith to have them assess your locks. They will be able to tell you if rekeying is a viable option or if it is better to have them replaced.
